The Dell PowerEdge R740 reaches end of support on 2026-08-31. After that date Dell ships no further firmware or security updates for the platform. Sales ended in August 2021, so any R740 in your racks is at minimum five years old, and most are older.
This article is for anyone still running them, which is a lot of estates: the R740 was one of the most widely deployed two-socket servers of its generation.
What end of support actually changes
The server does not stop working on September 1st. What stops is the flow of fixes. Concretely, three risks start compounding:

The three realistic options
Replace on the current platform. The direct successor path is the PowerEdge R770. Rail kits and PDUs generally carry over on a like-for-like rack swap; power supplies need review, since high-end R770 configurations draw more than the R740 era planned for. Consolidation is the quiet win: several generations of core-count growth mean one new host typically absorbs multiple R740 workloads.
Buy time with third-party maintenance. Honest option, with an honest limit: it keeps hardware running past the date, but it cannot produce firmware or security updates that no longer exist. Reasonable as a bridge for workloads already scheduled to move; risky as a destination.
Retire the workload. Some R740s are running things that should move to SaaS, the cloud, or nowhere. End of support is a natural forcing function for that inventory review.
How to sequence it
Work backward from the date. Inventory which R740s run what, sort by blast radius, and move the compliance-relevant and internet-facing workloads first. If the estate is large, the realistic plan is replacement waves with third-party maintenance bridging the tail, and the plan should say so out loud.
